A once-a-week after-school program, Rad Traditions is guided by our Grow Eat Make principles and offers a holistic experience of The Ecology Center through the lens and tools of the farmer, the chef and the artist.
Course Descriptions
Creative Creatures! — Mondays | Ages 5 to 14 | 20 students.
Join Creative Creatures & Co. on the farm for a 5 week immersive and creative exploration of art on the farm. Each week we will build upon the seasonal theme of the plants, produce, insects and animals found on the farm as we paint, draw and sculpt the visual bounty that makes up the Ecology Center. Under the guidance of artist Kameron Von der Ahe of Creative Creatures & Co., students will follow their senses around the farm, learning how to repurpose plants into new works of art. For future world changers, this will be a workshop to remember. We can’t wait to create with your creative kiddo and see all the magic their imagination comes up with! All materials included.
Woodcycling Workshop: Upcycle and Create with Wood and Farm Materials!– Tuesday | Ages 8 to 14 | 16 students
Unleash your creativity and practical skills in our exciting after school program, Woodcycling Workshop! Guided by our motto, GROW, EAT, MAKE, this hands-on class invites you to embark on a journey of craftsmanship and sustainability alongside our knowledgeable Rad! Traditions Educator, Brandon Galmich. This class is all about turning discarded materials into fun new creations. We firmly believe that there’s no such thing as waste – just opportunities to transform items into something valuable. Brandon will guide your child through various woodworking techniques, from basic cuts and whittling to more advanced designs. Students will learn how to work with different types of repurposed materials found around the farm, creating functional and artistic pieces. Discover the importance of sustainability and responsible resource management. Explore how upcycling can reduce waste, conserve resources, and contribute to a healthier planet. Learn about the power of repurposing and its positive impact on the environment. Develop a keen eye for recognizing the potential in discarded items. Farm to Fork! with Chef Perla– Wednesday | Ages 6 to 14 | 16 students
Discover what it’s like to be a farmer chef while exploring the possibilities of connecting with nature and Regenerative Farming. The Ecology Center’s culinary educator, Chef Perla, will lead students in harvesting from our fields, blending late-summer and early fall flavors, learning essential cooking skills (including knife work and cooking techniques) and connecting with nature. Picky eaters will be transformed into culinary trail blazers through the deep connection with growing, making and eating fresh, seasonal food. Class will emphasize hands-on experiential learning opportunities and exploration of our working farm, culinary kitchen and children’s garden. Students can expect to learn:
Skate Wild: Skateboarding on the Farm with Todd Larson– Thursdays | Ages 7 to 14 | 16 students
Whether you want to learn how to skateboard or connect with nature and farming, this course has something for you. In addition to skateboarding the mini-ramp, kids will learn hands on farming and nature skills including shelter building, fire making, cooking over fire, archery, a food scavenger hunt and outdoor team building games. Skateboards and helmets can be provided on request or feel free to bring your own. Drawing from traditional camping skills combined with wilderness survival. Todd Larson has been involved in youth outdoor education for the past 20 years. As the founder of the Skate Wild foundation, a non profit connecting kids to the outdoors, he takes a very hands on approach to this goal. Todd engages kids with experiential learning and a connection to the past and how it has shaped how we do things today.
